Day 12: Zaspira Gentle, Sorceress on the run (for Terror Target Gemini)



Zaspira Gentle was a happy woman. She had graduated near the top of her class and recently been engaged to her long-time girlfriend Minnea. The world was at her feet, and that was her undoing. Zaspira was ever so slightly arrogant, and had done the unthinkable and CORRECTED the elf sorceress Shastra Blum, a rich alumnus of the Skeelvader College of Arcane Arts. Now, Shastra is nothing if not petty, and Zaspira lost more than a few job opportunities from a few careless words.

Her response was a little tinged by desperation as well as arrogance. She was going to make a small deal with a demon. “After all” she reasoned “I have demonic blood myself, and I am well-versed in the Seven Conjurative Frameworks of Gonlin, at least in theory”.

The grimoire promised that Eligos “...also attracts the favor of lords, knights and other important persons”, and that sounded like just the thing. The grimoire was a tatty old thing, and like such books was woefully incomplete if not downright deceptive. Eligos is the infernal duke of unreason, and its wisdom and boons come in the form of madness.

Zaspira remembers little of the negotiations. She remembers a castle built on a foundation of pink clouds, a dancing girl, and a puppy with a jester’s cap. She woke up to pandemonium. Shastra had given her a great portion of her fortune, before being consigned to a madhouse. Shastra’s relatives threatened legal action, or a one-way trip to a shallow grave

The worst was Eligos’ sigil, shuddering on her arm. In a language of pestilential smoke it promised Zaspira wisdom that would atomize her being. Riches that would make her insensible with joy. The prize and the cost were the same.

Minnea, Zaspira’s fiance, lasted ten days before fleeing one early morning, rags torn from her nightclothes shoved in her ears. Zaspira herself fled into the Maju, far from anyone she cared for. Her madness would only endanger or taint them. She can often drown out Eligos’ voice with booze and bravery, but sometimes she finds it useful to call upon the demon’s psychedelic wisdom.

This is a hack of TROIKA! (and Fighting Fantasy in general). You play the part of a creature serving an evil overlord. The war against the Forces of good isn’t going as planned, and it may be time for some hard decisions. Do you stay and fight or desert? Do you try to switch sides (as if the Forces of Good would ever trust or shelter you)? Or do you maybe have some crazy scheme which might turn the tide in your favor, and visit doom upon the armies of elves, dwarves, humans and warrior angels.
