Day 23: Jacob Severn (Strange Endeavors)

Here is Jacob, a second character for Strange Endeavors, my horror lifepath rpg, based on Cepheus and Enoch's Wake. If you are interested in how the character is made, I go through the process below. 

Jacob Severn grew up on a horse ranch outside of Marshalltown, Iowa. It was not a booming business, but his parents had the money to send him to college. Jacob did well, even if studying finance sometimes took a backseat to socializing in the frat. That was where Jacob met  Sean LeFevre from Spokane. The two are friends until this day, even if the relationship has seen some strain lately. 

Jacob failed to even start a career in finance, despite going quite well in college. Biding his time he took a job at a carpenter specializing in “bespoke stable solutions”. He was a fast learner, and could see himself working with his hands like this for the rest of his life. Then the company had to downsize, and he fell for the old first in - first out. 

Severely pissed off at life, Jacob spent some time climbing in a bottle most nights, and waking up around noon feeling like refried death. It was partying in name only, and was growing quite hateful to him, when he met Anne. She told him about her work as a camgirl - and Jacob was in. With Anne (fairly vanilla stuff) and by himself, taking requests. 
A guy(?) named Chet was his biggest supporter. Always polite in chat, and never stingy. He did like some things that were harmless if a bit odd. Wear this silk cape, draw these symbols on your chest and jack off. Wear this lipstick (Back Talk matte from Urban Decay) and enunciate the word “chiurgeon”. 
In the slightly longer run Jacob did not make ends meet, and he has started supplying the cam work with some light phishing. People are dumb when thirsty. 

Something might have followed him home though. Last night Jacob came back to a trashed apartment. Someone had drawn an eye on the wall with a magic marker. Tonight Jacob is sleeping at Anne’s.

For Starting Boon I choose Background skills. I choose Animals and Gun Combat, envisioning a rural background. I roll to get into college, which I handly do.I get two skills, but it’s mainly social it seems, as I roll

An increase in Resources is sorely needed. A Person Counting On You is the sort of contact that expects something from you. It could be a certain code of conduct, or a friend who expects you to not be an asshole. 
Then I fail to get into a corporate job. Not to be deterred I start on a Craft or Trade. That works! I get the result

I’m getting good at my trade. I imagine something to do with horses. Bespoke stable solutions or whatever. It doesn’t matter, as I fail to keep the job. Layoffs, I guess. 

I resort to Odd Jobs, as there’s no roll for entry. I get more skills and roll on the Cash-in-Hand subtable (the other two, Grey Area and Darkness Beckons get progressively shadier). I get: 

Adult Entertainment
Porn, camming, stripping, hosting, escorting etc.
Carousing, Performance.
Take a fan as a contact. 

Quite a career change. I imagine that this means self-employed as a cam person. I’m still dogged by bad luck as I roll Misfortune for the next term. 

Misfortune
Not so much a job as a drain on your finances. -1 Resources

The Resources stat is back where it started. I change tack and roll on the Darkness Beckons table for the next term.
