[Day 15] The Complete Works of Sewan Sooth the Younger
The Complete Works of Sewan Sooth the Younger
The Works is a being comprised of books. Leather bindings with brass corners formed a ridged back, like that of an exotic lizard. Black alchenical paper form the sinewy limbs, and the great jaws is a copy of “Tears of the Wyvern” thrown open on the centre pages.
The creature stalks the great library of the Resolute Custodeans, the only place known to have a complete collection of Sewan Sooth the Younger’s writings. The Resolute Custodeans are tough greybeards who have dedicated themselves to collecting all wisdom for whoever come after us when the world ends as it has been foretold.
The creature is territorial and a swift ambush predator, at least in behavior. It does not eat those that it kills, but flays them and uses their hides to write on. If the part of the library it considers its turf can be avoided, the Works is harmless enough.
The Resolute Custodeans are in disagreement about what to do with the Works. Its existence is a threatens to turn schisms within the order to open war.
One group, the Resolute Custodeans Inviolate, believe that it is sacrelige to change a word in the texts. They are to be kept as they are for future generations to see our wisdom and folly. As such the Works shouldn’t be interfered with.
Another, the Pragmatists, believe that wisdom that cannot be used or referenced isn’t wisdom at all but dead weight. As such the Works should be put down so that the knowledge in the books is accessible.
A third group, the Seekers, have noted that the Works write some quite interesting and thoughtful syntheses of Sooth’s disparate ideas. It also hungers for more “of itself” which is to say further works by Sooth. Since the sage ha never been declared dead by any authority, the Seekers resolve to find Sooth and bring the Works further sustenance.
(There are also those without lofty convictions who just enjoy working with books. Preferably ones that do not bite).
Hp 13, Morale 7, book scales -d2, Hand of a thousand paper cuts 1d6, Claw of quills 1d4+special,
Bite 1d3+special.
Special: the Works may use any two of its attack every round.
The Claw of quills drips with ink and etches sigils into the victim’s skin. Thesesigils will be worth a lot to any sorcerer. Of course sorcerers might not want to pay the owner for the privilige of getting flayed.
The bite contains the same venom as a genuine wyvern. Test Toughness DR14 to avoid one painful hour of paralysis.
The Works is frightened by and susceptible to damage by fire. However all Resolute Custodeans forbid the use of open flame in the library, and will set aside their differences to enforce this.
Resolute Custodean (any group)
Hp 5, Morale 8, no armor, letter opener 1d4, light crossbow 1d6 (ten bolts each)
