Day 8 Dennis “Hellgrinder” Seligmann, Rhythm guitar


Dennis was a punk, until he heard Possessed. Now he’s a metal punk. He dropped out of high school as many predicted, and works at the Snap-E-Mart, corralling shopping carts and stocking shelves. 

Dennis is interested in the occult, but hasn’t moved far beyond Time-Life’s Mysteries of the Unknown series. He loves regaling Deidre with half-digested factoids about UFOs and Satanism, not least because it annoys her. Musically, they’re very good at playing off each other, and Dennis’ caveman riffs and Deirdre’s wild explosive experimentation provide a kind of counterpoint to each other. Dennis isn’t effusive with his praise, but he has a deep admiration for Deidre’s playing. 



Dennis has a fondness for ‘getting up peoples’ noses’ (as his dad would say). He’s got an ongoing vendetta with the high school football team, even after he dropped out. This has earned him some bruises, as well as legend status for getting a sheep with a pentagram spraypainted on it into the locker room.

His mischief extends to his band mates, particularly Matt (bassist and vocalist). Matt’s just way too serious and pretentious, like he thinks there’s a recruiter from Julliard hiding in the practice space. Matt calls him childish, which is total bullshit. A song about bloodsucking aliens (Extraterrestrial Exsanguinator!) IS mature when you’re into metal. What does he want? An epic song cycle about architecture or whatever? 

If a session devolves into bickering and beer, it’s usually Dennis who instigates it. He’s got an in at the liquor store, and is always up for throwing back a few. Or a lot. Dennis’ dad is an alcoholic, and sometimes he wonders if that’s where he’s heading. It’s different though. Dennis drinks with friends. Dad just drinks alone and gets maudlin or mean. Dennis has really got to find his own place. 

His mother left when Dennis was little. He can’t really fault her, but why couldn’t he come along?

31 Character Creation Challenge Post-Mortem

  My creativity really had some peaks and troughs this time. More troughs than peaks, really. My plan lasted all of a week, but it wasn’t much of a plan. I chose  Black Powder & Brimstone  because it was a new twist on a system I know well (Mörk Borg), and writing these slightly cartoonish Central European horror characters is quite easy for me. Day 29: Akkara Shaaf (for Sorcerously Advanced)

  We'll end the month with some characters for the posthuman fantasy rpg Sorcerously Advanced. In Kornhaime, where you’re from, the grindstones are bigger than castles. You worked your fingers to the bone in the immense mills, until one evening when a voice seemed to beckon you from one of the grain silos. Day 27: Faustino Jargal, for Sufficiently Advanced

Faustino Jargal is here undercover on behalf of all mankind. All mankind, starting with their own sliver of it. Faustino is a spy for the space ark Darga, a Spacer ship. Spacers are the remnants of those who set out from Old Earth but never found their forever home. These surviving ships have since built dozens of new vessels, sending them off at greater speeds towards more distant worlds, or even other galaxies. Darga is one of these ships.  The Dargans are Survivalists, and believe that posthuman entities, such as the Tivoli Aggregate, are essentially alien gods. They are an overwhelming threat to humanity, unmoored from any sane limitations or beliefs.The Dargan Survivalists know (or think that they do) that any information that reaches the ‘gods’ can be sent back in time, potentially ruining thousands of years of human progress.
