Soledad was a fresh journalist back in 1992, when she was sent to cover a viewing of the infamous cult movie Châtiment at the Madrid home of millionaire Xavier Sanz. She could tell you that Gaspar Noe was not present on that day. She could tell you what she remembers about the movie (disjointed images of men with many tongues, animals of no known species brutalizing themselves, and a ragged length of human skin whose accusatory eyes brimmed with tears). She won’t though.
Soledad emerged from the villa sporting a neck wound, brandishing a letter opener, and consumed with a new goal: To destroy all copies of Châtiment, and all who have viewed it. It is an infestation of evil that must be scoured from the world. She does not know how many copies or people that is, but she feels deeply that she will know when the darkness has lifted and all that is left is to kill herself.
Soledad is a Spanish woman in her late fifties. Wearing a cleaner’s smock or waitress’ uniform, she can be all but invisible. That is how she gets close to her victims. She has traveled in container ships to the United States, and in the back of trucks to Northern Europe, tracking down the infected. Soledad seems pleasant, but any prolonged conversation will make it clear that she has little inner life left beyond her mission and the dreadful images which haunt her. She has even forgotten her family name.
So far Soledad has not found a copy of the accursed film, but that is about to change. Xavier Sanz, the man she hasn’t been able to hunt down, has shown his hand again. The old devil is looking for another copy of Châtiment, according to Soledad’s journalist source Alfonsine.
How was once not enough?
