There was a time when mankind wasn’t the only mortal denizens of this world. There was a sister species which resembled us greatly, yet was fundamentally Other. Mankind named them after the place where they first encountered them, but that name is lost to the ages.

They were strong, these Others. The gods seemed to favor us equally, and we forged wary bonds with them. In the end though, mankind rose up and slew the Others. Perhaps we loathed the way their faces looked like distortions of our own. Perhaps we resented the way they whistled for the wind and sang to our souls. Perhaps we just wanted their caves, their hunting grounds and their possessions. The Others were a red smear on our history, but no stories were told about them.

Yet the memory refuses to die. Cousin is that memory, grown large and looming with time and obscurity. Cousin for his part does not wish mankind ill. That battle was lost long ago. Cousin will however smile blithely at us from the other side of the firelight, reminding us of our worst attributes. And if we throw him an offering now and then, that is only what he deserves. If not he will have to take it.
