HIT POINTS: 11
Since high school, Alex has gravitated toward horror, mostly in movie form. In his adult life this has become his all-consuming interest. Gore movies, the nastier the better, that is his poison, and his refuge. In a movie like Ground Glass Whores III or Mr. Torso Takes A Holiday, suffering isn't some bland potential or quotidian duty. It's right there, usually in the form of power tools and medical equipment. The worst is happening, making apprehension and anxiety moot.
Alex's holy grail is the legendary French arthouse movie Châtiment. Rumors are many, but facts are thin on the ground when it comes to this piece of transgressive cinema.
Allegedly it is the greatest cinematic ordeal. Allegedly the director committed suicide or trepanned himself with a paring knife. Allegedly Gaspar Noe walked out of a private screening less than ten minutes in. Allegedly it lays bare the human soul and the reality of damnation.
In Alex's life, the cosmic punchline is Imogen. She is his daughter, and she is developmentally disabled. At the age of 10, Imogen still wears a diaper and has limited language. Just one of those cosmic pratfalls in the shape of a person, or so Alex sees her. He is emotionally and verbally abusive to Imogen, and mostly tries to ignore her, unless she makes a mess.
Alex shares custody of Imogen with Liv, an ex-girlfriend. Alex's current girlfriend is Andie. She's a patient woman, and genuinely likes Imogen. Her patience with Alex is wearing very thin though.
Alex makes a living as a copywriter, but the jobs are dwindling.
