Day 16: Doctor Deanna

Deanna Emmerys, M.D. (for Sigil & Shadow)

Deanna always had the gift of Sight. She was a fast learner, and after confiding in her mom at age 6, and netting herself a talk with a child psychologist, she kept shtumm. Sure, it was a bit lonely at night, when spectral moths with children’s voices circled over her bed. But when a tall woman with a hollow back drowned little Jason Becker in the park pond, and everyone said it was a tragic accident, she decided that most people were weak. And the weak need protection.

At Johns Hopkins she studied neurology, but branched out voraciously into ophthalmology and psychiatry, in order to understand why some people can sense a world that others are entirely shut off from. Her personal life was a series of short relationships, ended by Deanna when they became inconvenient or by the other party, when they discovered that she viewed them with some measure of pity and condescension.
All doors were open to Deanna when she graduated, but she decided on a less-prestigious position at Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital’s neurology department. Her real drive remained the science of the unseen.

After a few exploratory trips into the occult underworld, Deanna found herself sitting opposite Imogen “The Widow” Gaffigan. Views were exchanged, and the two came to an agreement. Deanna would work as an off-the-books medic, in exchange for a safe(r) window into the strange.
Deanna has proved a first-rate asset for the Gaffigans. A medical doctor with Sight, who also understands than certain things need to remain hid is a rare find indeed. Deanna is still working on her scientific model though.

By concentrating in a meditative state, the mystic opens their “third eye” to glimpse beyond the Curtain.
• Sixth Sense allows a mystic to read the auras of anyone nearby, as well as ascertain the presence of any spirits or entities within the Echo in the vicinity. Shadowed and cryptids give distinct auras.
• Maintaining Sixth Sense while focusing on an individual allows the mystic to discern one of the following from their aura: an aspect of their personality, their emotional state, or if they’re under paranormal influence (magic, mesmerism, possession etc.).
• Maintaining Sixth Sense makes the mystic appear as an apparition in the Echo. They cannot physically interact with other beings in the Echo, but may use (or be targeted by) any powers that have psychic, spiritual, magical, or emotional effects.
