31 Days Character Creation Challenge Day 04: Into the Odd

 Today's Into the Odd character is an Unhuman. Don't call them 'Gnome'.

Dhome is next to Klavss, continuing clockwise around the fire. Actually Dhome is tinkering with the fire, or rather the bunsen-like contraption which made the fire possible in the first place. Humans call Dhome’s people Knomes. Also Gnomes, Hnomes, or Lnomes. It matters not a jot, since humans, being contrary creatures to a man, refuse to pronounce the first consonant anyway. Dhome’s people call themselves Kabouter, which translates roughly as “Those closest to the stars”. The Kabouter usually live atop mountains and hills, in structures disguised as natural objects (rocks, dead trees, cogwheels fallen from the machinery of night). Dhome themself is a scavenger, although they would probably prefer ‘reclaimant’. They have descended from the mountains to recover lost star-technology. The fire-maker they are currently working on indicates, to their experienced eyes, that a whole cache of wonders is likely to be nearby. They’ve got a mind to enlisting these Big People to help unearth it. Elkvan, Grobelaar and Klavss encountered Dhome only. It started as what we might call a Mexican standoff between Elkvan and the ‘Knome’. Humans have a near-instinctive dislike of Kabouter, and things could have gotten ugly. Fortunately Grobelaar, being a mutant, has a very broad concept of ‘normal human’, and Klavss has little frame of reference for anything, and so were able to parlay an uneasy truce. Dhome is about 120 centimeters tall. They are bald and have a beard of tiny, almost glass-like spines. They are curious about all forms of contraptions they don’t already know. They seem a bit aloof to non-Kabouter, but that is merely because of their vast knowledge of things humans can barely comprehend. Dhome is willing to try to bridge the gap, but not if it means risking their life. 31 Character Creation Challenge Post-Mortem

  My creativity really had some peaks and troughs this time. More troughs than peaks, really. My plan lasted all of a week, but it wasn’t much of a plan. I chose  Black Powder & Brimstone  because it was a new twist on a system I know well (Mörk Borg), and writing these slightly cartoonish Central European horror characters is quite easy for me. I chose  Cthork Borg  for the same reason, and because I enjoyed making characters for con games with it. Terror Target Gemini  was new, fun and colorful, and was burning a hole in my pocket. It was a joy to make some morally dubious adventurers. By Dawn They All Were Dead  is my own rudimentary system, and it’s nothing if not simple. The characters were the usual conflicted or tragic ones I make for con games. I love superhero games, but I practically never get to play them. Day 31: Irmon the City of Hope (for Sorcerously Advanced)

This is a hack of TROIKA! (and Fighting Fantasy in general). You play the part of a creature serving an evil overlord. The war against the Forces of good isn’t going as planned, and it may be time for some hard decisions. Do you stay and fight or desert? Do you try to switch sides (as if the Forces of Good would ever trust or shelter you)? Or do you maybe have some crazy scheme which might turn the tide in your favor, and visit doom upon the armies of elves, dwarves, humans and warrior angels.
