31 Days Character Creation Challenge Day 03: Into the Odd
Day 3 is upon us. We’re still doing Into the Odd. This Time We’re on to the Simple Folk. These people live in the Deep Country, and people from elsewhere think they’re bumpkins and dumb as rocks.
If we continue around the fire, we come to Klavss. She’s a strapping lass from the Deep Country. Here’s one of the stories people in the failed cities love to tell about Klavss’ people.
The Deep Country folk loved pickled herring. Unfortunately they only came in barrels from one of the cities, and cost an absolute bundle. Worse, the traders did not accept the money the Deep Country folk made themselves. Then one of the elders had a brilliant idea. Why not breed pickled herring? It had worked a treat with the chickens.
The plan was soon set into motion, and the next barrel of pickled herring was poured into the pond where they were expected to multiply. Now, deep in the pond lived a cloud-mottled tiger gar, and that old devil had never eaten so well before.
When the folk discovered that the herring were gone they were irate. The gar was too fat to evade their nets, so it was soon caught and brought before the elders. The sentence was death, and one of the elders who’d fallen in a well once remembered the pain and terror of almost drowning. This sounded like just the thing, and the gar was thrown in the water. Back in his natural element the gar wriggled and writhed.
“ He’s feelin’ it now!” the elder cried. “Lookit them death throes!”
That is the kind of prejudice Klavss is likely to encounter in the world she has journeyed into. She met Globelaar and Elkvan just as they were being menaced by a trio of exsanguinator cranes. Klavss knew that they only preyed on those they perceived as weak, so a loud yell and a thwack with her lanter sent them packing. Since that day Elkvan and Grobelaar has allowed her to tag along. That means they’re walking behind Klavss, talking big.
| I think she's the hero. |
Klavss is a tall and wiry young woman with long wavy hair. She wants to go to Bastion, prove that she isn’t a fool, and return home with riches and new ideas. To her credit she’s not a fool, but she is naive about many things.
